 REGIONS AND THE PETANQUE HIERARCHY

Our 1990 League was started to encourage petanque playing for fun and the enjoyment of an evening out and this remains our prime concern. However, we know many of our players are good enough to play at a Regional level and would perhaps like to join our other 1990 players at Regional events but maybe find it all a bit of a mystery.

The following will hopefully help clear the fog.

We do understand that such aspirations are not for everyone, but the Committee want to support any player that does, so it is appropriate that we inform and assist all those who wish to take this sport further.

The difference in level between League and Region is not as great as you may think.

PETANQUE ENGLAND (PE)

is the National Governing Body and is responsible for petanque for the whole of England. Besides its responsibilities for governance in general (and the England petanque team in particular), it has split the country into Regions, each of which organises its own regional competitions etc.

REGIONS:

Historically there was only one route to regional representation, but PE now ratify the CENTRAL PETANQUE ASSOCIATION (CPA) to cover Leics and Rutland.

The 1990 League now solely aligns with, and endorses, the CENTRAL PETANQUE ASSOCIATION - and in fact has a representative on its committee.

The CENTRAL PETANQUE ASSOCIATION organises Regional Competitions, Inter-regional matches and qualifications for National games.

The CPA will welcome all 1990 players to enter its competitions - though do be aware many will require a PE licence.  Contact CPA direct for advice or the 1990 committee if you prefer.

LEAGUES:

A number of leagues operate within Regions or even across Region boundaries. Locally the main leagues are our own 1990 League, the Rutland League and the LPA. All Leagues organise “Open” and “Closed” competitions and events. Anyone can enter "Open" events, whilst the "Closed" events are available only to their own players.

CLUBS:

You also may also find yourself near a local petanque club such as the Leicester Petanque Club based on Western Park. They enter teams into local leagues and also runs there own competitions, also with both "Closed" and "Open" events. Clubs tend to have more more of a social side than “pub teams” and are more focussed on encouraging youngsters to join and play. It is usual for clubs to run teams in one or more leagues and they can affiliate to PE in their own right.

OPPORTUNITIES TO PLAY

Your committee is keen that 1990 players have the same opportunities as those in other local leagues. As such we will advertise any events that we become aware of so please keep your members updated even if you yourself may not be interested. Contact the 1990 Chairman or Secretary for further advice (details on our website)

Please be aware that Regional Events may be played under the International Rules of Petanque. These rules aren't massively different to our 1990 rules but you will notice them, and the etiquette may be different. We can explain these differences to you, so please contact us for a chat, contacts or any advice.

We are always happy to advise on or arrange coaching with qualified England coaches. Be it for an individual, a team or several teams together.
